EMPLOYEE TIMETABLES
and SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS
FEBRUARY 29,1948

The Union Pacific Historical Society is pleased to present this, a reprint of a complete set of Union Pacific Employees Time-Tables having an effective date of February 29, 1948, along with Special Instructions for each division. Time-Table collectors will find the effective date of this set interesting - a leap year - and significant as well. A major realignment and consolidation of divisions had just taken place and effective February 29, 1948 the Union Pacific eliminated two divisions. The Colorado Division was spun off into the Kansas and Wyoming Divisions and the Washington Division was consolidated with the Oregon Division. At the same time, the company started anew the sequential numbers for each division with No.1. (With the exception of the Bridge Subdivision.) It is interesting to note that these divisions created in 1948 remained basically unchanged until about 1980.

This collection of time-tables provides an excellent view of the Union Pacific in the post-war era. The Streamliners are now daily and Motor Trains and Mixed Trains are numerous, Local Freights and Time Freights are listed, steam is king but diesels are encroaching. The inclusion of tonnage ratings and other operating details in the companion Special Instructions adds more depth to this snap shot of this great transportation system in 1948.

It is the hope of the UPHS that this reprint of this collection will be useful in your research.
